The Importance of Stretching…or is it really that important?

Researchers find that static stretching before an intense workout will wear you out quicker and make you more liable for injury. The misconception is that doing static stretches warms you up. It doesn’t. Traditional stretches, like bending over to touch your toes can actually cause your muscles to tighten instead of relaxing. Think of it like stretching a rubber band to it’s maximum. When you do this you’re more likely to pull a muscle.

Furthermore, several studies have recently found that static stretching before playing a sport makes you slower and weaker. Researchers are now finding almost no difference in reported soreness between individuals who stretch and those who don’t.

So what do you do? Stretch? Don’t stretch?
Stretching is fine. It’s great for improving your flexibility and most experts suggest doing it a few times a week. But they suggest stretching by itself. Consider stretching to be it’s own mini exercise plan. Or at least do it after you work out.

It’s going to be a hard habit to break but think about doing alternative thing to warm your body up. A quick jog is much more effective than standing there and stretching random muscles. Or think about squats or lunges before you take off on that run.
